For this project I have to create a ‘Type Specimen poster’ choosing one designer listed on Blackboard. The poster should be designed for a iPad screen (1024x1366) and should include a small bit of information about the typeface.
To begin researching into the different designers we had to pick from I started by looking up the designers to see what their typeface was. Getting close to the end of the list I found Paul Renner who designed the typeface named ‘Futura’. I felt like I recognized this typeface which once I researched where it is used it is used by a lot of popular company's such as Ikea, Nike and Dominoes Pizza. Below is a image I found showing examples of modern brands which use Paul Renner's Futura font from this website https://www.grapheine.com/en/history-of-graphic-design/typography-futura-paul-renner. The website also included more valuable information such as history of the typeface during Nazi Germany, how the font was designed and even more examples of where Futura has been used.
Once I was familiar with the typeface I then went to research and read about it in detail which I started by researching Paul Renner the designer. During my research I found it that he was a German typeface designer, author and he was the founder of the Master School for Germany's Printers in Munich.
Paul designed the Futura typeface between 1924 and 1926 which he released it commercially in 1927 by the Bauer Type Foundry in Frankfurt, Germany.
The typeface is based on geometric shapes including the circle, square and triangle similar in spirit to the Bauhaus design style of the period. This is something I may take into consideration when designing my typeface poster to show ‘history’ and ‘meaning’ to my poster.
Futura was designed to represent the future which the name ‘Futura’ is German for ‘Future’. The designs geometric shapes, lines and symmetrical design were intended to reflect the modern world.
