For this project I have to create a poster focusing on one Article of the Universal Decoration of human rights. The poster will be focused on typography which I can use elements of point, line and plane where appropriate.

Research

To begin my research of this project I started by reading through all the different articles of the UDHR to pick one to create a poster for which there was thirty in total. As all these Articles are important, I decided I would pick which one where I could see myself being most creative with so I picked Article Six, “Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.”

Looking for existing posters of Articles of the UDHR, lots of them focus on using large graphics or actual photos in them which I can not do for this task. Lots of these posters I have seen use hands or fists in their posters to represent people ‘standing up’ for human rights.

These types of design don't really inspire me and I would consider these too complex for the requirements of what I have to create for this project. However The colour and typography are good in these designs.

Going back to week four, ‘colour’ and from previous knowledge I have understanding of how different colours can be seen. For example red can show anger, danger or negative emotions overall. As we are so used to seeing red as ‘danger’ such as warnings or ‘caution’ such as stop signs which are typically quite eye catching. I think I will use the colour red in my design to highlight the most important parts of the article which would also make them eye catching The red will also represent how serious the article is, similar to ‘shouting’ it gives a bold tone.

As previously mentioned, I really like the typography choice for these posters in the second and third design. Similar to the colour red, the bold typeface gives a ‘shouting’ bold tone which shows seriousness and really highlights how important the articles are. I also think the choice of a bold blocky typeface really gets the idea across of people ‘standing up’ for human rights where for example, if it was a more ‘friendly’ typeface such as ‘Open Sans’ the viewer may not read the text in the same tone.
