In week two we looked at typography in depth such as looking at how a typeface can give different tones, personality and looked at some useful websites to help search for typefaces.
In week one I was tasked to come up with brand name ideas for my online bank and five brand values. I knew by my name ideas I had a favourite, ‘UniFi’ which is a multi purpose name, but just by looking at it you may not know the full meaning. During the time of everyone putting their ideas on Miro I asked my lecturer for some feedback so I could explain the meaning in depth with him.
My Lecturer really seemed to like my idea as it was well thought out which he also gave me very useful points and to include another version under my five names but spelled as ‘Unify’.
Firstly, my Lecturer mentioned that the name ‘UniFi’ can easily be read as something to do with internet or HiFi and also that ‘UniFi’ short for University Finance has a smaller target audience. He then gave me the idea of trying the name ‘Unify’ as it would reach a more broader audience. During this talk he explained that my idea could work, but once the user leaves higher education they can move onto a current bank account. I am very grateful for this feedback, as I knew my idea did have a specific audience but I know there is a market for this as apps such as UniDays and Students Beans are popular with students.
After getting my ‘favourite’ feedback from class it was close between both UniFi and Unify which was expected. During my feedback a classmate mentioned that the ‘UniFi’ name as it has the name ‘Fi’ it tells the customer it is online based, which could work as it is a online bank. Where another classmate mentioned that the name ‘Unify’ reaches a broader audience as ‘UniFi’ sounds strictly for Students which was my original idea. Going by feedback for now I will go with ‘Unify’ but this may change in the upcoming weeks.
To begin the lecture we looked at a short History of typography and how they were etched to be made important and to be appropriated. Once of the examples our lecturer asked which ‘Linguistic’ from week one was the text which it was Frozen. I decided to look into this more which I found out that it was called the ‘Trilingual inscription of Xerxes’ which it was written in Old Persian, Babylonian, and Elamite cuneiform (486–465 BC). I decided to look into this a bit more as I just find it fascinating how far back typography dates and how it has changed from etching to digital.
Moving on from a brief history recap we started to look at modern typefaces beginning with the ‘tone’ of typeface. A tone of a typeface is the emotional feeling or impression a typeface tells the reader.
