This weeks lecture was all about ‘Wordmarks’, which this is a new term for me so I was curious what a workmark was.

The first task I completed in this Lecture was to identify different typography terms using my bank’s name ans chosen typeface. There was a guide provided on blackboard which I found very useful as the majority of these terms are new to me. I did find this task surprisingly fun, as it is something I have not thought of before when choosing a typeface. This task was completed to help guide me for what I could possibly edit in my typeface to create a unique wordmark.

This is my completed piece for the anatomy of type including the baseline and different heights. Originally I thought that the ‘X’ height is the height of a letter case letter which during the group discussion I found out that it is actually the height of a ‘x’. Once I found this out I went back to check which a letter case ‘x’ was the same as what I measured previously. During this task I identified nine unique elements I could take into consideration in the future.

Further in the lecture we had a look of what ‘wordmarks’ actually look like from excising brands to have a understanding of how they look, and what can be edited to create a strong unique wordmark. During this section of the lecture the brand ‘FedEx’ was mentioned and how it had incorporated meaning which the ‘E’ and ‘X’ create a arrow which is something I have never noticed before. Other wordmarks include custom and handwritten such as the Disney logo being the signature of Walt Disney.

Wordplay

For the final task in this lecture was titled ‘Wordplay’ which I had to incorporate the meaning of the list of words in a visual typographic design.
