THE INFLUENCE OF MODERN ART

Cubism

Cubism was one of the most dominant visual art styles of the early 20th century, which was created by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in Paris between 1907 and 1914. Cubism art style was to show multiple angles at once of different objects or figures, resulting in art which looks fragmented and abstracted. African art was a major influence to Cubism.

PLAKATSTIL

Plakatstil is a German poster style which originated in 1927. Plakatsil posters were very simple and used flat colours. The posters focus on a main object or figure with bold eye-catching text. Plakatsil was the main influence for the beginning of propaganda poster design in WW1. An example of Plakatstil design is the Priester match poster designed by Lucian Bernhard in 1906 which the design is very minimalist.

A poster I own designed by Adidas uses ‘Plakastil’ design using flat colours, bold text which the main graphic is eye catching as the white contrasts well with the black and turquoise. This poster also uses the shadow design which was common on designs focused on a figure rather than a object.
