This weeks lecture covered the basic design ‘laws’ of creating a good UI, especially for Mobile layouts.
There was many different laws covered with some being obvious and some not as obvious. I found Jakob’s law very interesting that a user would prefer your site to work the same as any other site. In other words, with an entirely new layout and obscure flow the user will feel lost
I also found Fitts Law interesting which is to ensure large hit targets/buttons are used, especially on small screens to make sure the user can actually use them.
The lecture went in depth about the average width of a finger and thumb in pixels which I thought was funny, however this makes a lot of sense to scale buttons to be large enough for the user.
Colour schemes, contrast and readability were also covered which goes back to semester one, however it was good to have my mind refreshed on this.
This week I have learned new ‘laws’ to make sure I apply to my work. I did find some very obvious and others not so much. I particularly found Jakobs Law very interesting as it is something I have not previously thought of when designing however I do see how this is very important.
The tip to test in Figma is something I found very useful which I will definitely do on my mobile for my music player app as testing on desktop is not at all a good way to test accurately to ensure buttons, scale and reach all work as planned.
