This week we looked at the International Typographic Style and the Swiss Style during the mid 20th century and how they influenced modern design with their simplicity, legibility and objectivity.

We looked at many different artists and their styles, how they were influenced and how they have influenced modern design.

JAN TSCHICHOLD

Jan Tschichold (1902-1974) was a German calligrapher, typographer and book designer. Tschichold developed Swiss Typography in Switzerland in the early 1920’s which he was mainly influenced by the Soviet Constructivism, Russian Constructivism and the Bauhaus which were all minimalist designs. Tschichold revolutionized craftmanship of the letterform using asymmetrical brilliance breaking new ground in type design allowing a balance of elements. Tschichold also designed his content using hierarchy to highlight the most important content in his designs to have the user read the text in a certain order using placement and scale.

This artwork by Tschichold greatly reflects on one of the Soviet designs I have looked at before. Tschichold has used the same colours, shapes and similar typefaces.

As I have mentioned before, I really like the Soviet Constructivism designs which Tschichold has created a style very similar. I love minimalist designs with not too much graphics as I think adding too much can easily make something too busy and distract the user. Schiphol uses excellent whitespace in his designs which was greatly influenced modern design today.

ARMIN HOFMANN

A designer we looked at in class which I liked his Artwork was Armin Hofmann (1920-2020). Hofmann was a Swiss Graphic Designer which he is considered one of the most prominent individuals in Swiss Design. I really like Hofmanns designs as he abstracts away from the typical white background for lots of his designs which in my opinion makes the graphic stand out more.
