Postmodernism started in the late 20th century as a reaction against the formal structures and ideas of modernism. Postmodernism created a mix of styles that challenge traditional notions of form and function. Key principles included mixed media, non traditional anti formalism, pluralism

WOLFGANG WEINGART

One artist we looked at was Wolfgang Weingart (1941-2021) who was a German graphic designer and typographer. Wolfgang became a lecturer in Basel School of Design in 1968 which he taught ‘Swiss ****typography’ which was considered revolutionary because it introduced a new style of deign that emphasized on simplicity, clarity and readability. Weingart’s designs showed a more creative and experimental side of graphic design as it broke the rules against the international style which we looked it in week 7.

BARNEY BUBBLES

A designer we looked at which I thought was interesting was Barney Bubbles (1942-1983) who was a English graphic artist which in class we discussed how Bubbles re-proposed movements and appropriated past works. Looking at examples of his work I can identify similar shapes to past movements and artworks.

One of Bubbles’s designs for a album cover for ‘Generation X’, day by day was directly influenced by the ‘Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge’ by El Lissitzky for the Soviet Revolution which we looked at in week 5. His design uses similar colour, shapes and layout which is a great example on how a designer can appropriate and re-propose a design.
